I wanted to take an in-depth look at what I’m thankful for, since these things are often taken for granted. I went through my gratitude journal to help with this article. I quickly realized that there are only a few material items on the list, which is good! As a matter of fact, I feel that health, relationships, and experiences are the best things in life. I hope this list helps you identify what you’re thankful for in your life. These are in no particular order:
My best friend: She knows every story and loves me unconditionally. I place a high value on our relationship, and I know I can always count on her. It’s a mutual judge-free zone when we talk about our lives and that’s something that’s hard to find. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Circle of moms: I’m surrounded by a great group of moms that walk with me and are supportive of my kids. We are on the same page with parenting and it’s great to have moms who understand what I’m going through. You only need a few people in your life that you can relate to.
My mom’s set of dishes: I don’t use them often, but they still bring back childhood memories of the holidays and Sunday dinners. I grew up in the country in Western Pennsylvania and I still have fond memories of Stahlstown! I’m grateful that I experienced country living and can’t wait to get back to that someday soon.
Nourish + flex blog: I’m excited to share my wellness knowledge with others so they can apply these habits to their own lives. I always knew health and wellness was going to be part of my life in some form, I just wasn’t sure how. I love that I can express myself in a way that is helpful to others.
Christian music playlist: My playlist puts me in the best mood! After attending Oak Pointe Church in Novi, Michigan I really became fond of Christian music. It’s one of the reasons I keep going back on Sundays.
My consistency and discipline: These have helped me stay on track with my goals. I started seeing results and am excited to see what the future holds. Fitness, nutrition, my blog, meditation, playing guitar, writing, and many other habits fill each day. Maximize every day!
The science of well-being course: This course offered by Yale is what jumpstarted my wellness journey. I really embraced all aspects of it and gradually started applying those techniques to my life one at a time (fitness, nutrition, meditation, guitar, reading.) It led to me writing an eBook, “Holistic Habits” for balanced living, and then launching my blog in August 2024.
My boys: After having 4 miscarriages, I’m grateful that I was able to conceive and raise two boys. It’s been one of the toughest experiences I could ever imagine, but worth every second. They’ve taught me so many things and keep me on my toes.
Nice days: Michigan’s cold climate is often cloudy and windy. I’ve mastered the ability to appreciate the days that are nice enough to walk outside. Any chance to be outdoors is a bonus!
Texting my dad: My dad texts me on his flip phone every morning. It has become part of my day now and I look forward to it. He’ll update me on the weather in Pittsburgh and I’ll share what’s going on in metro Detroit. Who knew something so simple would bring a sense of connection to my day.
My 4-wheeler: I recently bought a two seated quad and I can’t tell you how it made me feel like a kid again. I used to own a 3-wheeler Honda back in the day so riding again was very nostalgic. It’s another great reason for me to be outside.
Access to quality food: As I learn more about our food sources, I feel lucky that I’m able to purchase quality food for my family. We order a cow each year from a small, family-owned farm in Mason, Michigan. As my knowledge increases, I’m able to fine-tune my nutrition plan and phase out unhealthy choices. Many people have no idea how to read labels so I’m grateful I’m educated in that area.
My guitar: I started playing guitar in May 2023 and it’s been an amazing hobby. I dream of being able to sit down and play an entire song someday, but I’m happy strumming short riffs that actually sounds like the song! I practice most days, and the consistency is paying off. I highly recommend learning to play an instrument. There are so many benefits!
Home gym: I lift weights five days per week and it’s great having the convenience of owning a variety of equipment. There are enough options that boredom isn’t an issue. My teen boys are also using it. It’s part of our daily routine that helps us maintain our healthy lifestyle. Getting in shape is one of the highest forms of self-respect.
I could add many more to the list, but I’ll save them for another time. It’s a good idea to practice gratitude on a regular basis to keep you grounded. Here are some strategies that will help you become thankful for the things in your life:
Journal
Practice mindfulness
Show gratitude to others
Reflect on challenges
Surround yourself with positivity
Limit comparison
It’s not surprising that being thankful has all sorts of benefits. It can transform your mindset, improve your health, and strengthen bonds with others. This practice will likely lead to a happier, more meaningful life. Here are just some of the benefits that being thankful has to offer:
Improves mental health
Enhances relationships
Boosts physical health
Increases happiness and life satisfaction
Strengthens emotional resilience
Enhances productivity
Encourages a positive outlook
Promotes generosity and kindness
Lowers negative emotions
Increase spiritual connection
Being thankful is a powerful practice that enriches every aspect of life. Focusing on what we have instead of what we lack is the foundation of true happiness. Material items can also bring happiness, but it’s usually short lived. The newness or excitement wears off and we’re left feeling empty. The tight-knit relationships we create along with memorable experiences is what really makes people tick. By cultivating a thankful mindset, we are able to navigate life’s challenges a little easier and have an attitude of appreciation. Take time today to write down what you’re thankful for!
